There’s something ridiculously satisfying about making your own homemade flour tortillas from scratch, especially when they only require three basic ingredients: flour, water and salt.

No oil. No butter. No preservatives. Just simple pantry staples transformed into soft, foldable tortillas with those golden blistered spots that make homemade tortillas so good.

These tortillas puff beautifully in the pan, stay flexible enough for wraps and enchiladas, and have that slightly chewy texture that store-bought versions never quite get right.

I originally started making these because I wanted something simple for homemade enchiladas, but they quickly became one of those recipes I kept making for everything from wraps and quesadillas to souvlaki-style lunches.

And honestly, once you make your own flour tortillas fresh off the pan, the supermarket ones just don’t hit the same anymore.

What Are Flour Tortillas?

Flour tortillas are soft, thin flatbreads traditionally made using flour and water, commonly used for wraps, tacos, burritos and enchiladas.

Unlike thicker flatbreads or pita breads, homemade flour tortillas are rolled thin and cooked quickly on a hot pan until they develop golden blistered spots and air pockets.

These homemade tortillas are soft, flexible and perfect for folding without breaking.

Ingredients You’ll Need

-400g plain flour
-200g lukewarm water
-1 teaspoon salt

That’s it.

No yeast, no oil and no complicated ingredients.

Why These Homemade Flour Tortillas Work

The secret to these tortillas is their simplicity.

Because there’s no oil or butter added, the dough cooks into thin, flexible tortillas with a slightly chewy texture and beautifully blistered surface.

Resting the dough also helps the tortillas stay soft enough to fold for wraps, enchiladas and tacos without cracking.

Tips For The Best Homemade Flour Tortillas

Roll Them Thin

Thin dough creates softer, more flexible tortillas with better puffing and blistering in the pan.

Use A Hot Pan

A properly heated pan helps create those golden charred spots quickly without drying the tortillas out.

Don’t Overcook Them

Cooking too long can make the tortillas stiff instead of soft and foldable.

Keep Them Covered

A tea towel helps trap steam and keeps the tortillas soft after cooking.

Resting The Dough Matters

Skipping the resting time makes the dough harder to roll and can result in tougher tortillas.

Ways To Use Homemade Flour Tortillas

These homemade tortillas are incredibly versatile and work well for:

-wraps
-enchiladas
-quesadillas
-tacos
-souvlaki wraps
-dipping with hummus or tzatziki

I especially love using them in my slow cooked enchiladas dish because they stay flexible and hold fillings beautifully.

Ingredients

  • 400 g Plain Flour
  • 200 g Lukewarm Water
  • 1 tsp Salt

Method

Make The Dough
  1. Add the flour, lukewarm water and salt to a bowl.
  2. Mix until a dough forms, then knead for around 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. If the dough feels too dry, add a tiny splash of water. If it feels sticky, dust lightly with flour.
  4. The dough should feel soft and pliable.
Let The Dough Rest
  1. Cover the dough and allow it to rest for 20 minutes on your benchtop.
  2. This helps relax the gluten, making the tortillas easier to roll out and helping them stay soft and flexible once cooked.
Divide & Roll
  1. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions.
  2. Roll each piece into a thin circle on a lightly floured surface.
  3. Don’t stress if they aren’t perfectly round. Homemade tortillas are allowed to look rustic.
Cook the Tortillas
  1. Heat a dry non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Cook each tortilla for around 1–2 minutes per side until bubbles form and golden charred spots appear.
  3. As they cook, the tortillas should puff slightly in places.
Keep Them Covered
  1. Stack the cooked tortillas under a clean tea towel to help keep them soft and flexible while the rest cook.

How To Store Homemade Flour Tortillas

Store leftover tortillas in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

To reheat:

-warm briefly in a dry pan
-or microwave for a few seconds under a damp paper towel

They can also be frozen with baking paper between each tortilla to prevent sticking.
