This is hands down one of the best chocolate cakes I’ve ever made – a rich and indulgent chocolate cake recipe with a molten centre that pours out when sliced. Especially when you want something easy that still gets a reaction.

I made this recipe about 10 years ago and wrote it down at the time… but I genuinely have no idea where it originally came from.

I recently came across the video again while scrolling through my phone and it instantly brought me back – mainly because I remembered exactly why I never made it again. It’s dangerously addictive.

When you cut into it, the chocolate just pours out. It’s rich, over-the-top, and one of those desserts that gets a proper “ooooo” reaction when you bring it out.

If anyone recognises where this recipe is originally from, please tell me so I can tag them – it definitely deserves the credit.

If you’re looking for a classic layered chocolate cake, this isn’t that. This is a chocolate bundt cake with a rich molten centre – easier to make thanks to a cake mix, but just as impressive.

To see that molten centre pour out when sliced, head over to my TikTok or Instagram.

Why This Is the Best Chocolate Cake

  • Ultra moist texture thanks to a reliable cake mix base
  • Rich chocolate flavour with a gooey molten chocolate centre
  • Easy chocolate cake recipe that comes together with minimal effort
  • Baked in a bundt tin for a soft, evenly cooked chocolate cake
  • Guaranteed crowd-pleaser with that “ooooo” moment when sliced

Tips for the Perfect Chocolate Cake

  • Don’t overbake – this keeps your chocolate cake moist. If you stick to the box instructions, you’ll be fine
  • Use good quality chocolate for a richer molten chocolate cake flavour
  • Let the cake rest slightly before slicing for the best texture

How to Get a Gooey Molten Chocolate Centre

The molten centre isn’t about underbaking here – it’s all in the ganache. Once poured into the middle, it stays soft and gives you that pour-out moment when sliced.

Is This the Same as a Classic Chocolate Cake?

Nope – and that’s the point.

  • A traditional chocolate cake recipe is usually layered and frosted
  • This version is a chocolate bundt cake with a gooey centre
  • It’s quicker, easier, and designed to impress when sliced

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix any brand will do!
  • 2 cups 480ml thickened cream
  • 455 g dark chocolate
  • Cocoa powder for dusting on top

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a bundt tin thoroughly.
  • Prepare the cake batter according to the packet instructions in a large bowl, then pour into the prepared bundt tin.
  • Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
  • Make the ganache by heating the cream in a small saucepan until just simmering. Pour over the chopped dark chocolate and let sit for a minute, then stir until smooth and glossy.
  • Turn out the cake onto a serving plate once baked.
  • Create the molten centre by pouring the ganache into the centre hole, letting it overflow naturally over the top of the cake.
  • Finish with a light dusting of cocoa powder and allow the cake to sit for about 30 minutes before slicing.
  • Serve and enjoy while slightly warm for that perfect molten effect.
