Yiayia Anna
Meet Yiayia Anna, the woman I was very clearly named after. Warm, loving and impossible to leave hungry, she showed her love through food long before I ever understood what that really meant. Every dish that came out of her kitchen was generous, comforting and made with care. Born in 1934 in the village of Ammochori, Florina in northern Greece, Yiayia Anna later left everything familiar behind to start a new life in Australia with the love of her life, Lazaros. Together they built a home, raised two boys and created the kind of family kitchen everyone gravitated towards. Her kitchen was always the heart of the home. And if she offered you food, refusing simply wasn’t an option... unless you wanted to hear about it for the next three days. In 2022, at 88 years old, Yiayia Anna passed away, but her recipes, traditions and spirit live on in our family every single day. Anne’s Appetite is my way of keeping her cooking, stories and love alive.
